Technical solutions

Technical solutions are key components that go into the planning, delivery and the long-term stewardship of Nature-Based Solutions. Concerning the technical component of the Connecting Nature NBS Framework implementation, the partners of Caucasian Hub team plan to:

  1. Reinforce the strategy of mainstreaming NBS in urban planning in the region.

  2. Attract other Caucasian cities and towns to think about NBS as a way and tool of building urban resilience.

Co-production

The creation of Municipal Councils and Action Plans aimed at climate adaptation ensures the involvement of all those directly affected in the installation of NBS, and should be encouraged in the coming years.

Nature-based enterprises

The NBE movement in Brazil is growing, mobilizing and increasing new technologies of green-blue infrastructure and green jobs. The construction and publication of a roadmap for the public procurement process, foreseen in the Connecting Nature project, could mobilize the market and attract new companies to the theme.

The next challenge for the business sector will be to invest in companies' knowledge about NBS so that they can recognize themselves as NBEs or even direct their activities towards the theme.

Financing and business models

The lack of recognition of NBS in the country makes it difficult for cities to access resources for NBS projects on their own. One of the closest avenues of funding for NBS actions in Brazil is the inclusion of NBS in future infrastructure projects by local governments - a guarantee of resources focused on the inclusion of green-blue infrastructure.

Currently, one of the main sources of funding for NBS projects are banks and international cooperation projects, which in the context of many Brazilian cities, is still a welcome source of funding.

Technical solutions

In the coming years, an advance and development of new research related to NBS is foreseen, especially those related to urban green areas (such as urban afforestation and linear parks) and the incorporation of green strategies to civil construction (such as vertical gardens and roofs vegetation), as well as landscape-scale restoration initiatives, still very important for Brazil where a series of cities face the challenges of urban growth and the need to restructure its territory.
